Chazy beats Hamilton 2-1 in state semifinals

Chazy advanced to the state championship game with a 2-1 win over Hamilton.

Matt Gravelle's first career goal with 9:45 left in the game turned out to be the game-winner. The Eagles gained a measure of revenge by knocking out Hamilton, the team that came from behind to beat Chazy in the state championship game last year.

Hamilton took a 1-0 halftime lead when Drew Thompson scored on a header off a free kick. Chazy tied the game early in the second half when Kyle McCarthy scored from Tyler Bulriss.

Chazy outshot Hamilton 18-7 for the game. Austin Santor made 4 saves for the Eagles, who will face Northville in today's New York State Class D championship game.

2009 season under way

The 2009 season began with the non-league Chazy Soccer Classic tournament this weekend.

Game 1: Chazy 2, Canton 1 (OT)

In the first game, the boys faced Canton. Chazy jumped out to an early lead when freshman Kyle McCarthy scored just 17 seconds into the game. Canton tied the score in the second half, to force the overtime. With 58 seconds left in OT, Shea Howley scored on a direct kick to win the game.

In the other match, Beekmantown faced PHS, and that game too ended tied at 1 each after regulation. Jordan Conroy scored in overtime to win the game for Plattsburgh, and set up a Chazy-PHS matchup for the championship.

Final: PHS 1, Chazy 1 (OT) Plattsburgh wins on penalty kicks

In the final, PHS scored first in the 35th minute of the first half, but the Eagles tied it three minutes later, Kyle McCarthy scoring from Nathan Reynolds. Neither team could score in the second half or overtime, so the tournament championship came down to penalty kicks. PHS scored on 4 penalty kicks, to Chazy's 2, to claim the title for the third year in a row.

The official score of the game was recorded as a 1-1 draw, but the championship goes to Class B Plattsburgh High School.
