Hunter Dominy's goal early in the first half stood up as the game-winner as Chazy avenged their two regular season losses to Willsboro, winning the Section VII Class D championship 1-0 on November 5.

Along with the early goal, the key to the win was Chazy's defense keeping league-leading scorer Clay Sherman off the score sheet.

Jordan Barrierre picked up the assist on Dominy's goal. Goalkeeper Austin Santor made a big save in the second half, punching the ball away off a corner kick to preserve the shutout. Chazy outshot Willsboro 16-2. Willsboro keeper Cody Sayward made 10 saves for the Warriors.

Chazy lost a conference game for the first time since 2004, as Willsboro shocked the Eagles with a 3-1 win.

The move to the new Northern Soccer League promised to be a challenge, with the Eagles playing against bigger schools. But it was their old MVAC rivals Willsboro who were the first to defeat the defending state champions.

Clay Sherman scored on a breakaway in the first half to give the hosts the lead, and Willsboro scored on two corner kicks later in the half to grab a stunning 3-0 lead. Nathan Reynolds scored a late goal to get the Eagles back to within two goals, but it was not nearly enough.

Congrats to Willsboro for the win, and to Chazy for putting together such a long streak. Hopefully they can start another one soon, but the new league has already proven to be a tough challenge.

Chazy season under way

The defending NY State champion Chazy Eagles got their season under way last week, hosting the Frankie Garrow Memorial tournament played annually in honor of former Chazy soccer player Frankie Garrow, who passed away in a tragic car accident in 2009.

In the first game, Chazy shut out Beekmantown 2-0 to advance to the championship game.

In the finals, though, the Eagles lost a tough one to PHS, 1-0.

Video of the game is here, on the Hometown Cable network site.

Last year, Chazy lost a close game to PHS in the final of the Garrow tournament, but things worked out just fine, as that would be the only defeat of the year for Chazy, who finished with a 21-1 record and a state championship. This defeat won't be a problem if this year turns out anything like last season.

In a big change, this year Chazy will be competing in a new league, in Division II of the Northern Soccer League. The Eagles will be joined in the division by longtime MVAC rivals Elizabethtown, Westport and Willsboro, along with larger schools Lake Placid, Northern Adirondack, and Seton Catholic. The league this year will definitely be a tougher challenge, competing against the larger schools, but the Eagles should be up for the challenge.

The Press-Republican last week published a preview of the season, complete with rosters of all the teams.

The Chazy Varsity Boys Soccer Alumni Facebook page has posted a schedule for this season:
Frankie Garrow Memorial Tournament

09/14 - Elizabethtown
09/17 - at Saranac
09/19 - Seton Catholic

09/26 - Lake Placid
09/28 - at Westport
10/01 - Ogdensburg
10/04 - Northern Adirondack
10/06 - at Elizabethtown
10/11 - at Seton Catholic
10/13 - Willsboro
