State champ Chazy in for challenge

It was another banner season in 2007 for the Chazy boys' soccer team.

The Eagles ruled the Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference Northern Division with a 12-0 record and didn't stop while going on to win another NYSPHSAA state championship in Class D.

Chazy, however, has only six players back from that team this year and rival teams in the North, Elizabethtown-Lewis in particular, will be setting their sights on trying to overtake the Eagles.

Chazy

First, the bad news for the Eagles (24-1, 12-0).

Record-setting scorer Nolan Ryan has graduated.

Chazy lost all four starting defenders and its goalie from last season.

The Eagles return just three starters and six players in all from a year ago.

Chazy, however, has its rich tradition in soccer and is gearing toward another run at league and sectional titles despite the varsity inexperience on the team.

Senior forward Stetson Fields, senior midfielder Jason Baker and senior defender Ben Baker return as starters, while freshman midfielder Jordan Barriere and sophomore defender Kaleb Snide are projected as starters.

Varsity newcomers who are expected to make the starting unit include freshman keeper Austin Santor, junior defenders Andrew LaPierre and Michael Santor, junior midfielder Shea Howley, eighth-grade midfielder Nathan Reynolds and eighth-grade forward Brandon Laurin.
